Day 10 - Port Aux Basque

Today we are going to take a little detour, based on advice from the two Victory riders we met at the Ferry, and ride out to Trout River...then we'll backtrack and get on the road toward Port aux Basques.

All loaded up and ready to roll!

Gonna post a bunch of...

...pics of this morning...

...the scenery...

...is stunning...

...the roads are...

...a blast to ride, and Mary is getting some of her cloud pics.

Look closely at the pic. Mary did a great job of catching this bald eagle that flew in front of us. Can't really see it in this photo, but it had a snake or some entrails? hanging down from its' beak.

We are thoroughly enjoying the ride...

...this morning!

This detour over to...

...Trout River is turning out to be...

...just as "advertised". Curving...

...scenic (yes, that's snow in the distance)...

...and a lot of fun to ride!

The constant change in terrain...

...is just one of the things that keeps it interesting...

...yep, that's the ocean in the distance!

Getting close to Trout River!

Here's the river, that is headed toward the sea. Small village built around it.

(might be interesting to do a google search for a satellite view of Trout River, Newfoundland)

We headed on down to the end...

...of the land.

Took a walk down to the water...

...picked up a rock for Lela (DK's accountant wanted a rock from Canada for her collection)...

...we spent about 45 minutes...

...enjoying the tranquility of this little ocean village.

Time to head for Port aux Basques. We have reservations on the ferry that leaves early tomorrow morning.

The ride back...

is just as stunning...

...and interesting.

Near the hairpin curve into Bonne Bay.

We don't know what the gas stations will be like between Bonne Bay and the Port, so we stop for gas at Pike's Service Station. Nice view!

Making our way back to the 1, that will take us south...

..actually the 430, that will take us to the 1, that will take us south to Port aux Basques.

Looking like some rain maybe...

...fantastic views and riding...

...yep, got a little rain going on.

At this point we've ridden almost 300 km today. Got another 167 to go...

...and most of it looks like this.

There is a curve every now and then.

This section of road headed southwest...

...has a view of the ocean every now and then...

...and some mountains, here and there...

...but basically it is long, desolate, and in stark contrast to the rest of the island. Almost there-

Mary has reservations at a motel right across the street...

...From the ferry we're taking tomorrow. Photo taken from the motel parking lot of where we'll be loading up in the morning.
